About Us

Birdtail Ranch Quarter Horses began in the late 1940s when Doug and Nancy Dear began building a herd from their strong group of ranch horses. They focused on breeding Quarter Horses that were kind, with no buck, willing to work hard with sound minds. Because of their dedication, Birdtail horses have won multiple championships in AQHA, rodeos, 4-H and other arenas in almost every discipline.

Their daughters, Barb and Dee, continued the tradition winning many trophies and ribbons in the rodeo and show arenas. Today, Barb and her husband, Russ, focus on the angus production of Birdtail Ranch, in addition to raising Quarter Horses that excel in cattle events.

Dee Dee continues to run the main Quarter Horse operation with her mom, Nancy. Her goal remains providing people with all-around horses who have wonderful minds, gentle dispositions, straight legs, speed, cow-sense, are beautiful to look at - standing still or in motion, and are capable of doing whatever you ask of them.

Our extended family includes all of those who have owned or currently own one of our horses. We have grown close to many of you over the years and recognize that you have truly contributed to the success of our ranch - thank you.
